Washington, DC · Courtyard Garden

A garden by Everett Conroy and Landis Garden Design.

A modern L shaped house looked onto a private courtyard anchored by an enormous beech tree. To create an inside/outside transitional space, a flagstone threshold was created at grade with all the sliding glass doors, and tied into a new walkway.A hedge of black bamboo was planted in a 30” in-ground containment system that is up-lit at night to reveal the beauty of the canes.

The courtyard was covered with gravel edged in stone for a low maintenance, organic look, with a special ochre fountain vase centered on an opposing wall for a focal point. Framed by seat boulders and fountains emerging from the gravel, an informal, natural seating area is established.

Bordering the gravel area is a sweep of evergreen liriope, ferns and hostas, hakonechloa grass, creeping jenny, nandina and oakleaf hydrangeas. A small Japanese maple sets off the front entrance and bridges the scale of the beech.
