Chevy Chase Village
This backyard was completely reconfigured to provide a family with recreational spaces while forgoing the typical suburban lawn. What was critical to maintain, however, was a 120-year-old brick wall lined with evergreen holly trees. That wall’s curved bump-out lined up with the central axis of the house and was a strong focal point visible from the front entrance.
The garden was divided into thirds to accommodate a French intensive vegetable garden, a central entertaining space for dining, entertaining, and fish keeping, and a space for the kid’s trampoline. Strong geometric lines were created with mixed materials (gravel, brick edging, flagstone patios and stone walls) to provide structure and an architectural framework, which contrast with lush, abundant plantings to create an informal, romantic, rich look.
Evergreen holly trees, thujas and boxwood provide screening and structure, while a carefully coordinated mix of perennials and grasses provide bountiful color and textural combinations that change every month. The garden also features unique sculptures, decorative accents, and containers as focal points.
